In Their Words

A Father's Day card

This started with a Father’s Day card. I’m Ricky. When my son Benny was three, he gave me a card filled with his answers to questions about me.

Benny’s Father’s Day card, a blue card titled My Daddy, by Benny, age 3, with the answers written in by hand, among them 6, Hotdogs, Closing windows and Hugs me.
Benny's card, age 3.

According to Benny, I was six years old. My favorite food was hot dogs. And I was good at closing windows.

One question asked how he knew I loved him. ‘Hugs me.’

That card made me so happy. I loved getting this little glimpse of how he saw me. But I kept wishing I could have watched him come up with the answers. I wanted to hear his voice, see his expression, and find out how confidently he announced that I was six. I wanted to be able to watch that moment again.

That’s why I made In Their Words.
